I’ve just read an interesting article on TechCrunch about Japan’s success in serving the mobile web. Some important facts from the article:
- since 2006 more people have been accessing the web through cell phones than through PCs
- Over 70% of people in this nation of 127 million are subscribed to mobile web data plans
- Carriers providing frameworks to motivate content providers for mobile publishing
The question is wether Japan’s strategy is an adaptable blueprint for the mobile business over here in good ol’ Europe. In my opinion, it is not only depending on content providers but more on carriers to provide devices and easy to understand data plans!
I’m really interested in mobile web and since my company is responsible for serving an internet portal with lots of visitors from Japan, maybe we can start a proof of concept project on it.
